Lecture by Sofia Kucheryavenko “Andersen’s Fairy Tales in European Illustration of the First Half of the 20th Century”
30 September, 2023 | 17:00
Oskar Klever's exhibition The Dream – White Horse gives an opportunity to look at Hans Christian Andersen's legacy from new perspectives. At the thematic lecture by Sofia Kucheryavenko, MASP's educational specialist, we shall talk about Klever's illustrations for the Danish classic's literary works and touch upon the work of other European artists – we shall look at the magnificent graphic cycles of Edwardian master Arthur Rackham, French-British Orientalist Edmund Dulac and the famous World of Art group member Ivan Bilibin.
Museum visitors will find out how different artists presented fairy-tale themes unleashing their authorial approach in illustrations and how Andersen's stories allowed illustrators to become full-fledged co-authors of his literary works.
