GUIDED TOUR OF THE CURRENT EXHIBITIONS FOR SILVER AGE VISITORS

Vistors will explore three solo exhibitions: Yulia Sopina’s (b. 1968) Myths about Life, Yulia Ivanova’s (1944–2019) Growing from Shape and Iosif Zisman’s (1914–2004) Beauty of Silence.

The first exhibition features mystical and intriguing works by the notable Petersburg painter Yulia Sopina, done between 2019 and 2023. Playing children, flowers, birds, animals are immersed in a mysterious atmosphere of stillness. They turn into a kind of mesmerising rebus paintings, Alice's dreams in Wonderland, which the artist invites the viewers to unravel.

Yulia Ivanova's exhibition takes us to a different era and offers for viewing the works by the legendary artist of the 1970s–1990s Leningrad underground. Exposition includes the best pictorial and graphic pieces from these years – works that are bold and daring in conception, and at the same time thoughtful and contemplative in a Petersburg way. There are still lifes, which became a field of experiments for Ivanova, psychologically penetrating self-portraits and mystical landscapes inspired by Petersburg. Her painting combines traditions dating back to the art of Cézanne, Malevich and Old Russian imagery.

The third exhibition presents one of the leading representatives of the Leningrad school, the outstanding painter and graphic artist Iosif Zisman. Viewers will observe the whole panorama of his more than half a century creative career. These are graphic works from the late 1920s – 1930s, demonstrating a search for style, and picturesque landscapes from the 1950s–1980s, depicting Leningrad and various places, visited during numerous trips around the country, and emotional genre scenes, and psychological portraits, which the artist painted all his life.
