Studied at A. I. Titov’s studio (1909); the Imperial Academy of Arts (1910–1911) under F. A. Roubaud; M. D. Bernshtein’s Art School (1912–1914); the Imperial Academy of Arts as an external student (1912–1914, 1917). Exhibited from 1909. Member of ONTI (Association of New Art Trends, 1922), the association Chetyre iskusstva (Four Arts, 1928), the Union of Soviet Artists (1932). Worked as an artist for the magazines Satyricon and New Satyricon (1917–1918); in Petrograd Department of Okna ROSTA (Russian Telegraph Agency Windows, 1920–1921); as art editor at the Gosizdat publishing house (1924–1933); as Department Head at the Detgiz publishing house, Leningrad (1933–1936); in the Okna TASS (Windows of the Soviet Union Telegraph Agency) Department of TASS, in the Voenizdat publishing house, for the magazine Krasnoarmeets (Red Army Soldier), Moscow (all 1942–1945). Taught at PGSKhUM – VKhUTEMAS, Pg – VKhUTEIN, Pg–L (1918–1924), Professor; the Repin Institute of Arts (1932–1933). Honoured Art Worker of the RSFSR (1945), People’s Artist of the RSFSR (1966); Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Arts (1967). Main collections: A. S.
