Studied at the Baron A. L. Stieglitz Central School of Technical Drawing, St Petersburg (1888–1891) under K. Ya. Kryzhitsky; the Drawing School of the Society for the Encouragement of Arts (1888–1891); the Imperial Academy of Arts (1894–1897) under A. I. Kuindzhi. Exhibited from 1893. Member of the Imperial Society of Russian Watercolourists (1893–1895), the Mir iskusstva (World of Art, 1901–1913) and 36 khudozhnikov (36 Artists, 1902–1903) associations, co‑founder and member of the Novoe obschestvo khudozhnikov (New Association of Artists, 1904–1906), the Moskovskoe tovarischestvo khudozhnikov (Moscow Fellowship of Artists, 1908), the A. I. Kuindzhi Society of Artists (1909–1930), the Union of Russian Artists (1913–1916), member of the Shestnadtsat (Sixteen) association (1922–1927), the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia (1924–1925), the Leningrad Branch of the Union of Soviet Artists (1932).
