The exhibition "Architecture of Myth. Metal. Stone. Color" is a special project of the Museum of St. Petersburg 20th and 21st Century Art, which main goal is to demonstrate certain aspects sculpture from the late 20th to the early 21st
century.

The exhibition brings together four representatives of contemporary St. Petersburg and Moscow sculpture: Alexander Gordin (b. 1941), Dmitry Verdianu (b. 1954), Pavel Ignatyev (b. 1973) and Vladimir Kolesnikov (b. 1954).

In spite of their different artistic backgrounds, common to these artists is a fundamental approach to sculpture as the ‘architecture of meaning’. The exhibition shows
how timeless mythological themes and classical forms are transformed, under the influence of a contemporary perspective on the material, evolving from museum classics into a living dialogue with the spectator.

The title of the exhibition reflects the three elements that the artists the artists expertly employ: the cold constructivism of metal, the warm texture of stone, and the decorative expressiveness of color. The artists belong to three generations of people born in the USSR, whose talent was shaped by strong classical sculptural traditions. And each of them, in their own way, brings certain innovative solutions to traditional sculpture.
