Studied at Leningrad Secondary School of Art (1961– 1965); the Repin Institute of Arts as an undergraduate (1965–1971) in the Faculty of Painting under A. A. Mylnikov, and as a postgraduate (1971–1973) also under A. A. Mylnikov. Exhibited since 1971. Member of the USSR Union of Artists (1973). Teaches at the Repin Institute of Arts (since 1972), Professor (1995). Honoured Artist of the Russian Federation (1996), People’s Artist of the Russian Federation (2007). Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Arts (2007), Academician of the Russian Academy of Arts (2013), Academician of the Chinese Academy of Arts (2005). Lives and works in St Petersburg.
