Studied at Leningrad Art and Pedagogical College (1938–1941); Leningrad Art College (1946–1951); the Repin Institute of Arts (1951–1957) in the Faculty of Painting under A. D. Zaitsev, V. V. Sokolov and B. V. Ioganson; in the Creative Workshop of the USSR Academy of Arts (1957–1961). Exhibited from 1957. Member of the Leningrad Branch of the RSFSR Union of Artists (1960). Taught at the Repin Institute of Arts (1959–2016), Professor (1989), Rector (1990–2001). Honoured Artist of the RSFSR (1981), People’s Artist of the Russian Federation (1994); Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Arts (1997), Member of the Petrovskaia Academy of Sciences and Arts (1997), Academician of the Russian Academy of Arts (2001). Awarded the Order Badge of Honour (1986), Order of Friendship (1997), Silver Medal of the Russian Academy of Arts (2000) and Gold Medal of the Russian Academy of Arts (2001), two Orders of the Russian Academy of Arts For Services to Art (both in 2012). WWII veteran, awarded the Order of the Patriotic War 2nd class, and medals For the Defence of the Caucasus, For the Victory over Germany in the Great Patriotic War 1941–1945.
