Studied at the Art Studio of the House of Teachers, Leningrad (1938–1939) under P. K. Golubiatnikov; the Repin Institute of Arts (1946–1952) in the Faculty of Painting under V. M. Oreshnikov. Exhibited from 1952. Member of the USSR Union of Artists (1952), Chairman of the Leningrad Branch of the RSFSR Union of Artists (1972–1975). Taught at the Repin Institute of Arts (1952– 1996), Professor (1971), Rector (1983–1991). People’s Artist of the RSFSR (1977), People’s Artist of the USSR (1991); Academician of the USSR Academy of Arts (1988). Awarded the Gold Medal of the USSR Academy of Arts (1986). WWII veteran, awarded the Order of the Patriotic War 2nd class, medals For Merit in Battle, For the Defence of Leningrad, For the Capture of Königsberg, For the Victory over Germany in the Great Patriotic War 1941–1945.
