Studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts – Petrograd Academy of Arts (1909–1918) in the Department of Painting under V. Ye. Savinsky and N. S. Samokish. Exhibited from 1904. Member of the Obschina khudozhnikov (Commune of Artists) association (1922–1925), the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia (1924), the Union of Soviet Artists (1929–1932), the Leningrad Branch of the Union of Soviet Artists (1932). Served as an artist attached to the Cavalry Corps of the army on the Western Dvina (1915), and on the Southern and Caucasus Fronts (1916). Head of the Fine Arts Circle of the Borisoglebsk-Leningrad Cavalry School of the Red Army Command (1920–1928). Taught at VKhUTEIN, Pg–L – Institute of Proletarian Fine Arts – Repin Institute of Arts (1929–1956), Professor (1939); Professor of Leningrad Higher College of Art and Design (1949–1956).
