Studied art at V. Mushketov private studio in Smolensk (1907); Stroganov Central School of Art and Design (from 1912) under D. Scherbinsky, F, Fedorovsky, S. Noakovsky; F. Rerberg studio (1915), I. Mashkov studio (1916); State Free Artistic Workshops (1917) under P. P. Konchalosky; VKhUTEMAS (1922). Exhibited from 1921. Founding member of the association OST (Society of Easel Painting, 1924). Worked as a production designer at V. F. Komissarzhevskaia Drama Theatre (1924) in Leningard; M. N. Yermolova Drama Theatre in Moscow (1932–1933); State Jewish Theatre in Moscow (1934–1935); executed panoramas and dioramas for the Soviet Pavilions at the World Fairs in Paris (1937) and New York (1939), and other public buildings in Moscow (late 1930s – mid 1940s). Taught at the State Free Artistic Workshops in Ekaterinburg (1921); at VKhUTEMAS in Leningrad (1924). Veteran of the Civil War, served as an artist in the 3rd Army of the Eastern Front. Main collections: A. A. Bakhrushin Central Theatre Museum (Moscow), State Literary and Memorial Museum of Anna Akhmatova at the Fountain House, State Museum of the History of St Petersburg, State Russian Museum (St Petersburg), State art museums in Kostroma, Novosibirsk, Omsk, Penza, Saratov, Ryazan, Vladimir and others.
