Studied at the Art Studio of the Kirov Palace of Culture (1936–1940) under I. I. Brodsky and M. S. Kopeikin; the Repin Institute of Arts as an undergraduate (1941–1949) in the Faculty of Painting under I. E. Grabar, V. M. Oreshnikov, and as a post-graduate (1949–1955). Candidate of Art Studies (1955). Exhibited from 1940. Member of the Leningrad Union of Soviet Artists (1949). Worked in the Poster Brigade of the Western Front, at Moscow Okna TASS (Windows of the Soviet Union Telegraph Agency, 1943–1945). Taught at the Repin Institute of Arts (1950–2008), Professor (1971); Professor at the Royal University of Fine Arts in Phnom Penh, Cambodia (1968–1970). Honoured Artist of the RSFSR (1971), People’s Artist of the Russian Federation (1994).
