Studied at the studios of P. P. Chistiakov and V. Ye. Savinsky (1910–1911); the New Art Workshop studio (1911) under M. V. Dobuzhinsky, B. M. Kustodiev and Ye. Ye. Lanceray; Ya. S. Goldblatt’s Painting and Drawing Classes (1912); the Imperial Academy of Arts – PGSKhUM – VKhUTEMAS, Pg (1913–1922) in the Faculty of Architecture and the Faculty of Painting under D. N. Kardovsky. Exhibited from 1918. Member of the associations Mir iskusstva (World of Art, 1918), Obschina khudozhnikov (Commune of Artists, 1918), Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia (1922), co-founder and member of the Obschestvo zhivopistsev (Society of Painters) association (1928– 1930), the Leningrad Branch of the Union of Soviet Artists (1932). Worked as an artist in the Detgiz publishing house, for Chizh (Siskin), Ezh (Hedgehog), Begemot (Hyppopotamus), Smekhach (Facetious Person), Crocodile magazines and the Pushka (Cannon) newspaper (1920s), an illustrator of Russian and foreign classics (1934–1948), an artist in the Experimental Printing Studio of the Leningrad Branch of the Union of Soviet Artists (1938–1940), a costume designer in the Pushkin Theatre and Leningrad Variety Theatre (1940s), an artist-designer of urban spaces in besieged Leningrad (1941–1944). Taught at the VKhUTEIN, Pg–L – Repin Institute of Arts (1929–1949), Professor (1937); the Leningrad Institute of Civil Engineers – Leningrad Civil Engineering and Construction Institute (1929–1949).
