Studied at Bezhetsk Non- Classical Secondary School (1910–1914); Ya. S. Goldblatt’s Painting and Drawing Classes, St Petersburg (1914); the Imperial Academy of Arts (1914–1918) in the Department of Architecture under V. V. Beliaev and G. R. Zaleman; PGSKhUM – VKhUTEMAS – VKhUTEIN, Pg–L (1920–1923) under K. S. Petrov-Vodkin, D. N. Kardovsky, A. A. Rylov and V. Ye. Savinsky. Exhibited from 1917. Member of the associations Obschina khudozhnikov (Commune of Artists, 1922), Krug khudozhnikov (Circle of Artists, 1927–1929), Obschestvo zhivopistsev (Society of Painters, 1928–1930), October (1930–1932), the Leningrad Branch of the Union of Soviet Artists (1932). Worked as an artist in the Raduga (Rainbow) and Detgiz publishing houses (from 1924), as production designer at the Bolshoi Drama Theatre, the Pushkin Theatre and others (1934–1940s), as an artist at the Leningrad Porcelain Factory (1930s). Taught at Leningrad Higher College of Art and Design (1948–1951). Honoured Art Worker of the RSFSR (1967). Awarded the Gold Medal and two Grand Prix at the World’s Fair in Paris (1937), the Order of Lenin (1967). Main collections: A. S.
