Studied at the Moscow State Art Institute (1966–1972) in the Faculty of Graphic Art under N. A. Ponomareva and O. M. Savostiuk. Exhibited since 1966. Member of the USSR Union of Artists (1975). Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Arts (2007), Academician of the Russian Academy of Arts (2012). Awarded Grand Prix of the V Triennale of Contemporary World Art in New Delhi, India (1982); the Ist Prize at the Biennale of Contemporary Art in Kosice, Chekoslovakia (1984); the State Prize of the Russian Federation (2002), Silver Medal of the Russian Academy of Arts (2007). Lives and works in Moscow. Main collections: Moscow Museum of Modern Art, State Tretyakov Gallery (all Moscow), State Russian Museum (St Petersburg), State art museums in Arkhangelsk, Bryansk, Kemerovo, Magadan, Novosibirsk, Petrozavodsk, Saratov and others; Museum of Contemporary Art (Sofia, Bulgaria), Gallery of Contemporary Art (Nuremberg, Germany), A.
