Studied at Moscow Secondary School of Art (1957–1962); Moscow State Art Institute (1962–1968) under A. M. Gritsai, D. D. Zhilinsky and S. N. Shilnikov. Exhibited since 1966. Member of the USSR Union of Artists (1969). Worked as a production designer in theatres in Moscow, Kuibyshev, Saratov and others (1962–1985); produces religious art for the Russian Orthodox Church (since 1989). Teaches at the Russian Institute of Theatre Art (since 2007). Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Arts (2001), Academician of the Russian Academy of Arts (2007). Awarded the State Prize of the Russian Federation (2000), the Medal of St Sergius of Radonezh, 1st class (2003), the Gold Medal of the Russian Academy of Arts (2004). Lives and works in Moscow (since 1945).
