Studied at Kharkov State Art Institute (1944–1950) in the Faculty of Painting. Exhibited since 1950. Member of the Leningrad Union of Soviet Artists (1951), the Gruppa “Odinnadtsati” (Group of “Eleven”) association (1972). Author of the books Put. Zapiski khudozhnika (The Way. An Artist’s Notes, 1998), Filonov. Podstupy k osmysleniiu (Filonov. Approaches to Comprehension, 2001), Muzyka zhivopisi (The Music of Painting, 2018). Main collections: Moscow Museum of Modern Art, State Tretyakov Gallery (both Moscow), State Russian Museum (St Petersburg), State art museums in Arkhangelsk, Belgorod, Krasnoyarsk, Perm, Petrozavodsk, Tomsk and Vladimir; Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam, Netherlands), Pinacoteca di Brera (Milan, Italy).
