Studied at the Art Studio of the M. Gorky House of Scientists, Leningrad (1930–1941) under A. A. Rylov and M. G. Platunov; A. R. Eberling’s studio (1930–1941); the Repin Institute of Arts as an undergraduate (1945–1951) in the Faculty of Painting under V. M. Oreshnikov, and a postgraduate (1951–1954) under A. M. Gerasimov; Candidate of Art History (1954). Exhibited from 1951. Member of the USSR Union of Soviet Artists (1952). Chairman of the Leningrad Branch of the RSFSR Union of Artists (1975–1979). Taught at the Repin Institute of Arts (1952–1991), Professor (1971), Rector (1977–1983), President of the USSR Academy of Arts (1983–1991). Honoured Artist of the RSFSR (1968), People’s Artist of the RSFSR (1976), People’s Artist of the USSR (1982); Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Arts (1973), Academician (1978). Awarded the I. Ye. Repin State Prize of the RSFSR (1976), the USSR State Prize (1985). WWII veteran, awarded the Order of the Red Star, the Order of the Patriotic War 2nd class, medals For Merit in Battle, For the Defence of Leningrad, For the Defence of the Soviet Arctic, For the Victory over Japan, For the Victory over Germany in the Great Patriotic War 1941–1945.
