Studied at VKhUTEMAS, Pg – VKhUTEIN, Pg–L (1921–1926) under O. E. Braz, K. S. Petrov- Vodkin, N. E. Radlov; GINKhUK (1926–1927) under K. S. Malevich; the Repin Institute of Arts (1932–1934) as a postgraduate under V. V. Lebedev. Exhibited from 1932. Member of the Union of Soviet Artists (1932). Worked as an artist for the publishing houses Detgiz, Detizdat, Detskaia literatura (from 1928); at the Bolshoi Drama Theatre and other Leningrad theatres (1936–1973); the Experimental printing workshop of the Leningrad Branch of the Union of Soviet Artists (1938–1940); the Boevoi karandash (Fighting Pencil) association (1941); chief artist of the All-Union Research Institute of Toys in Zagorsk (1943–1945). Honoured Artist of the RSFSR (1946), People’s Artist of the RSFSR (1966), awarded the State Prize of the USSR (1971). Main collections: A. S. Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, State Historical Museum, State Tretyakov Gallery (all Moscow), State Hermitage, State Russian Museum (both St Petersburg), State Museum of K. A. Fedin (Saratov), Shushenskoe Museum-Reserve of History and Ethnography (Krasnoyarsk Territory), State art museums in Arkhangelsk, Kirov, Komsomolsk-on-Amur, Magnitogorsk, Penza, Perm, Vologda and others.
