Studied at the Repin Institute of Arts (1945–1951) in the Faculty of Sculpture under A. T. Matveev, M. A. Kerzin and V. B. Pinchuk. Exhibited from 1950. Member of the Leningrad Union of Soviet Artists (1951). Creator of monumental works in St Petersburg, Karaganda, Murmansk, Penza, Dresden (Germany) and elsewhere. Head of the Creative Workshop at the Russian Academy of Arts (from 2005), Honorary Professor. People’s Artist of the RSFSR (1984), Honoured Culture Worker of Poland, Academician of the Russian Academy of Arts (2006). Awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit, GDR (1975), the M. B. Grekov Gold Medal (1986), the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland (1999), the Gold Medal of the Russian Academy of Arts (2008), the Order of Honour (2011), the Order For Services to Art (2012), the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland (2013) and others. WWII veteran, awarded the Order of the Red Star, the Order of the Great Patriotic War 1st class, medals For Merit in Battle, For the Defence of Leningrad and For the Victory over Germany in the Great Patriotic War 1941–1945.
