Bashmachkin and Noses. 1976
The exhibition is timed to celebrate the centenary of Viktor Vilner (1925–2017), one of the most enigmatic Russian graphic artists of the second half of the 20th century. The dominant theme of the artist's oeuvre is Petersburg, the city filled with real and fantastic literary characters of A. Pushkin, N. Gogol, F. Dostoevsky, and A. Belyi of course . The exposition will present works from the Islanders series, inspired by Andrei Belyi’s books. Vilner has his original, easily identifiable artistic vision: he combines in his compositions realistic and numerous symbolic images. The works on show, often mysterious, are dedicated to the city on the Neva - the island of European culture in Russia, according to the artist.
