Clowness and Clown. 1980s
Clowness and Clown. 1980s

The exhibition of an outstanding Petersburg artist Margarita Solovieva-Yefimova (born 1935) is timed to coincide with the 90th anniversary of her birth. The display will feature sculpture, ceramics and graphics. In Solovieva-Yefimova's seemingly serene works one can feel hidden drama, striving to comprehend the implicit complexity and contradictory nature of the world. The sculptor creates imaginary figures, inspired by primitive and folk art, and children’s drawings, some of them bring to mind the flying Chagall’s images. Solovieva-Yefimova expressively emphasises the fragility and defencelessness of her characters by the softness of the ‘fluid’ plasticity structure and the grotesque character of the silhouette, which intensifies over the years. However, even in the stem-shaped figures and mushroom-shaped objects of later years, the same touching ‘little people’ are still visible.

In parallel with her sculptural experiments, Solovieva-Yefimova always devoted a lot of time and creative energy to drawing. Diverse in form and subject matter, her graphics echo the sculptural ‘series’ in their emotional content. However, whether they are cheerful or sad images, they carry soulful delight. Her still lifes, landscapes, sketches of people with balloons, numerous images of the Phoenix Bird are always full of optimism. Bright, clearer in shape and more familiar to the eye than sculpture, the graphic sheets perfectly complement the ceramic compositions, helping a deeper understanding of the semantic content of the artist's work.

In 1997 the artist moved to Boston, USA. The exhibition is dedicated to the her works from the 1980s–1990s made in Russia.
