Studied photography under guidance of his father (since 1956); attended seminars of fiction translation at Leningrad Union of Writers (since 1973). Exhibited since 1984. Member of the photographers’ club Zerkalo (Mirror, 1984), founding member of the photographers’ group TAK (1985). Worked as a fiction translator, translated Western-European poetry (1973–1983); founded together with A. Ignatiev, Yu. Matveev, V. Potapov, L. Fedorenko, A. Chezhin and ran the first in Leningrad photography gallery Interfoto (1986); founded and ran photography gallery Gallery 99 (1990); founded together with V. Platonov Museum of the History of Photography in St Petersburg (2004), director.
