MASP Film Club: “Sedmikrásky” (1966), director Vera Khitilova

Have you already savoured the surrealist works by Oskar Klever in the exhibition The Dream – White Horse? The artist often turned to the aesthetics of symbolism, dreamlike themes and mysterious images of ghosts. We invite the visitors to see the surrealist film Sedmikrásky (1966) by Czechoslovak director Vera Khitilova, as part of the MASP film club cycle, in the movie reality and fantastic farce mix in a single chaotic phantasmagoria rich in visual experiments.

The film is about two girls performing extravagant antics that break the rules of the “adult” world. Yet the unusual plot of the surrealist film is just a frame for the striking director's findings. The film uses complex splices, combinations of colour, black-and-white and tinted frames, collage inserts and avant-garde techniques.

We shall get plunged into Vera Khitilova's movie fantasies together with film historian Valeria Kosenko, discuss the peculiarities of her artistic approach and the phenomenon of surrealist cinema.
